Unlike the Advanced version of the mouse, the button placement on this one is much better due to the slightly lower placement — at least in the case of the two-button plate. In addition, the left side wing is removable and can be swapped for the included six-button left wing.
The buttons on the six-button wing are slightly more than half the hight of the buttons on the two-button wing. Unfortunately, the smaller size made them a bit harder to access and know which one you were pressing.

Six side buttons are nice for extra gaming functionality but are a bit small in this case. The palm rest tended to stick and require some finessing. We found this part of the AW experience poorly implemented.
A braided cable connects to the very front of the AW Flip the mouse over to reveal two plastic feet lining each side of the bottom Centered between these is the optical sensor. Performance and Features The AW performs as smoothly as it looks.
The plastic mouse feet keep the mouse moving smoothly on wood, mouse pad, and plastic table alike. On the topic of surfaces, Alienware's automatic surface calibration analyzes the surface characteristics of your mouse pad or desktop and optimizes the mouse's response to those variables.
While automatic mode proved excellent, manual mode is quite finicky. Alienware's software requires that you rotate the mouse in a counter-clockwise direction, while holding down the left-click button.
It seems easy until you complete the first rotation, and the cable starts getting in the way. Naturally, if you let go of the button, or if the mouse leaves the surface, calibration will fail and you'll have to start over. With how well the automatic function works, the manual option is just a nuisance. In Alienware AW958 Elite Gaming Mouse software Control Center, Alienware provides a variety of customizations, including several lighting options for the three LED bars.
